Celtic Mass for the Sea
Sunday, July 11, 2010 7.30pm
"Beyond marvelous" Vicki Gabereau, CBC. The Celtic Mass for the Sea is a unique celebration of the sea's majesty, ferocity and vitality, with words and music based on Celtic themes. It is a powerfully imagined work for chorus, strings, and Celtic ensemble. Composed by Scott Macmillan, with libretto by Jennyfer Brickenden. The Celtic Mass for the Sea was composed in 1988 celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2008, It was premiered in 1991 with Symphony Nova Scotia and the Halifax Camerata Singers - Since that time, it has been performed every year somewhere in Canada and around the world. With over 60 national and international performances including Carnegie Hall, and about to make its Italian debut in 2011, the Celtic Mass for the Sea is sure to win your heart. It is especially fitting that the Celtic Mass be performed at St. Mary's. Scott Macmillan has deep Island roots and although he was born in Nova Scotia, the rest of his family, both Macmillan and MacLeod (his mother's family), were among the first Scottish settlers to the Island and he has ancestors resting in St. Mary's cemetery.
The Halifax Camerata Singers will join choristers from Prince Edward Island in this remarkable and moving work under the direction of Jeff Joudrey. There will also be a pre concert talk given by Scott and Jennyfer on the origins of the music and the text of Celtic Mass for the Sea.
