Friends of St. Mary's

Update - Summer 2010

A local group of volunteers came together in the summer of 2009 to facilitate the transition process following the decommissioning of St. Mary’s Church, Indian River. This group formed as The Friends of St. Mary's Church and was incorporated in November of 2009.

This association is committed to increasing public awareness of the architectural, historical and cultural significance of this beautiful building while also honouring its history as a sacred space. To this end, over the summer of 2010, the Friends are sponsoring guided tours of the church (Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day) and are organizing an inventory of sacred objects held there.

Leonard MacLellan, the Chair of The Friends, reports that renovations to the church are progressing. He states "We are pleased that St. Mary’s can now provide a permanent and viable home for the Indian River Festival."

The Friends of St. Mary’s Church has been busy establishing this association over the past year. Close to 100 individuals have joined to date. A lot has been accomplished but more needs to be done. The Friends would like to remind current members that memberships expire on March 31, 2011 and to encourage new members to join and support their community efforts to restore and maintain the church as a cultural centre. Please help us to achieve our goals.

Excellent Reviews

of Indian River Festival....

Since we discovered the Indian River Festival eight years ago, we make sure our annual vacation in PEI coincides with the Midsummer Magic weekend. Listening to great music in the acoustically superb and architecturally stunning church is an experience not to be missed. We love every minute of your wonderful and varied programming.
M Sherman, Vermont

What a memorable weekend! The Isabel Bayrakdarian and Serouj Kradjian recital was outstanding. The Church is an architectural and acoustical jewel. I will be back.
O. Gagnon, Montreal, QC

We want to say thank you to the Indian River Festival. It was the highlight of our trip to PEI. The beautiful Church with the ambience of the rolling countryside and the weekend of World Beat Music was magic.
J Ramsay, San Francisco, CA

Thank you for a wonderful evening ... voices beautiful, song choices excellent ... so much talent!
G. Snow, Charlottetown, PEI

I enjoyed the whole experience - the bagpiper to begin outside and during intermission, the commentary, the Church, enormously talented musicians - excellent!
J. Valihora, Ottawa, ON

If you love music and old churches on a soft summer evening, try to book your holiday to coincide with the festival at Indian River - you'll want to return.
K. New, Oakville, ON

I love attending concerts at St Mary's and especially appreciate hearing programs that are unusual - like Schumann's Dichterliebe.
J. Roberts, Crapaud, PEI

We always enjoy the concerts here - great music and evening out.
